Space Race - United States vs. Soviet Union

During my presidency, I had to deal with the worsening of relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Russian Government launched the Sputnik and it caused the United States to be unsettled. At the time, space race was a huge competition between all of the big countries and at this point in time, the Russians were winning. I was deeply interested in using space technology for national security purposed. I also believed that the missile gap between the United States and the Soviet Union is nonexistent. I didn't tell the American people this, but the demand for me to do something was overwhelming.

In April 1958, I proposed to congress that we have a National Aeronautics and Space Organization, to help the United States along in the space race. This program was a huge success. With a new space program in effect we could work more freely and have a bigger and better place to work. It helped our country become a bigger threat in the space race and a bigger contender in the race to the moon. Even though the space programs didn't work immediately, but in the long run, it has helped the United States greatly.
